When the technology was first introduced, photography quickly took a strong grip on the community.  It inspired awe as well as fear. Many believed it trapped one's soul on paper.  It quickly became a household item among the modern society and it changed our lives forever.

Today, absolutely everyone is a photographer. All you need is a good camera.  But for some people, photography is a passion; it's a hobby. And if you fall in this category, then perhaps you should consider making some money out of it.

Now let us stress something here: if you want to photograph the things you like, at your own time; if you want to go to luxury destinations to hunt great pictures; if you want to make money from photography and still enjoy it; then keep your real job and do photography on your own time.

The reality is if you become a full-time, professional photographer, then you'll most likely make less money, have to shoot boring stuff, forced to go to crappy locations, and soon enough you'll stop enjoying photography.

To make it as a photographer, you'll have to be your own small business. There's virtually no paid jobs for photography. In terms of its nature as a job, photography is really like acting. 1 percent of the population becomes superstar and get paid big. The rest, millions of photographers, just like countless number of actors out there, get only a trickle.

So keep photography as a hobby, market your pictures, showcase what you can do, and keep your real job.  Working for special events will be your best bet; get paid to take wedding or family pictures. Collect recommendations every time you get a satisfied customer.

Use a digital camera. Some photographers still try to eek out profit from photo processing; customers hate that!  So just do your work, burn your pictures to a CD, and give it to your customers.

Of course, you can get some extra cash by offering your customers to make a professionally-made album. If you're into scrapbooking or digital scrapbooking, you can definitely give some serious added value to your service.

Another way of getting money from photography is to sell your pictures online.  Once you take a picture, the right over that picture is yours. Put it online, and if somebody likes it and wants to use it say for their newsletter, website, or advertisement, then they'll pay you for it.  Making money online with your camera takes some research at the outset since you need to know what kind of picture most people are looking for and where to showcase your pictures. But once you're in the loop, you're on your way.

For most photography enthusiasts, earning profit from their hobby won't necessary make them a millionaire. But if you can get an additional annual income of say $10,000--which is very possible--then you'd have more to invest, travel, or buy better cameras and equipment. And you get all that from doing what you love.

So take out your camera and start making money. And remember, keep it a hobby.
